The Upside of Doubt
September 14, 1996 (Weekend Service)
To doubt is to be indecisive or ambivalent over an issue. It is a myth to say that real Christians dont have doubts. Rather, there are some great spiritual benefits to having them. A doubter refuses to hide skepticism and doesnt wish to ride on the spiritual coattails of other people. He undergoes the exercise of seeking out sufficient answers to good and honest questions. In his book The Gift of Doubt, Gary Parker writes, If faith never encounters doubt, if truth never struggles with error, if good never battles with evil, how can faith know its own power? Doubting can only turn negative when it begins to overpower an individuals ability to defeat sin and look to Jesus for guidance, wisdom, and forgiveness.
