Work As A Calling

August 31, 1996 (Weekend Service)

We've done ourselves a great disservice by limiting the word calling to only religious vocations. We assume that the work of pastors and missionaries is more meaningful than that of a plumber, a corporate executive, or a salesperson. However, this type of hierarchy is simply not true. An individual's calling is unique and cannot be judged based upon the calling of another. People are fulfilling their calling when their God-given talents are being used in ways that bring about joy and a renewed sense of energy into their work. Finding work that draws upon all your strengths is a long process. Along the way, make it your calling to value people and discover a greater perspective on why your work is significant.
