What Jesus Would Say To...: Dr. Jack Kevorkian
August 24, 1996 (Weekend Service)
Dr. Jack Kevorkian is a leading advocate for doctor-assisted suicide. He says the he has a compassion for suffering people and wishes to give them a dignified death. While Scripture doesnt explicitly condemn suicide by name, it does tell us that our lives were bought with a price. Jesus would tell Dr. Kevorkian that helping someone commit suicide is a way of abandoning them, and that those who understand the love of God dont abandon those who are suffering. He would tell him that God is big enough to care for dying people. He can give them courage and peace, and use their suffering to sharpen them and bring good into the world.
