What Jesus Would Say To...: Phil Jackson

July 5, 1997 (Weekend Service)

Phil Jackson grew up in a strict Pentecostal home that was filled with "fire and brimstone." He was required to attend church 20 hours a week and sat perfectly still under the hawk-like gaze of his overbearing parents. Rules at home were equally strict: no television, no movies, no modern music. He became discouraged at the age of 12 because he was unable to speak in tongues. To relieve his spiritual anxiety, Phil turned to the practices of Zen Budhism, mixing and matching various religious practices, including Christianity, as he so desired. If Jesus were to speak to Phil Jackson, He would first sympathize with his confusing and fearful upbringing. Second, He would tell him that Christianity cannot co-exist with any other faith system. Third, Jesus would say, "Ironically Phil, the very things that you have been seeking in your spiritual journey have been available all along through Me."
