It's almost human nature to defer to those that we think rank above us and show impatience and sometimes disdain to those we consider below us. It's not only human nature; it's also sin. Because in essence, we are trying to serve our own self interests. In Philippians 2:4, Paul says "Look not to your interests only, but to the interests of others as well." Previously, Jesus turned the idea of looking toward ourselves on its ear. He basically said, "You want to be honored in my kingdom? Then serve others." That's the key. God will honor our efforts if they are intended to consider others' interests in service, not only our own.
