Two Very Big Deals
June 5, 1999 (Weekend Service)
As humans, we like to observe milestones. In the life of a Christian, there are two milestones to observe. Popularly called sacraments, one is baptism, which is an initiation rite. The other is communion, an ongoing sacrament. Baptism is important because it signals that we have made a public decision to accept Christ as our leader and forgiver. Unlike communion, baptism is a one-time occurrence. Communion, on the other hand, is a repeatable sacrament. Its purpose is "to remember." Jesus commanded us to remember what he did for us on the cross. Because we have a tendency to forget, we use communion as that reminder.
