Getting This Christmas Right: How Do You View Gift Giving?

December 16, 2000 (Weekend Service)

The giving of gifts at Christmas can become more trouble than it's worth if we follow this world's lead. It's a good thing someone else had a better idea of gift giving: the Magi. They planned to give the Christ Child the gifts they did because the gifts were worthy of a king. Our gifts to friends and family also deserve advance planning. For the same reason, we ought to personalize our gifts. They should be of some meaning to the intended recipients. We should also determine an appropriate price: worthy enough of the recipients, but also something that won't violate biblical stewardship. The Magi had the right notion. We would be wise to follow it.
