Vital Optimism: Civility

August 5, 2000 (Weekend Service)

Most observers believe that in the past few decades, civility has declined in our culture. Manners have taken a beating in the past 30 years. But the way we treat each other is more than just manners. In order to battle the tide of uncivil behavior, we have to recognize that our fellow humans are created by, and matter to, God. As grace-givers, we also have to raise our children to treat others with kindness and respect. People who show civility also must offer forgiveness readily. Seeing others as God sees us can change rude behavior, and can affirm loving behavior.
