Father's Day 2000: The Power of a Good Dad
June 17, 2000 (Weekend Service)
Fathers aren’t perfect, but every father has enough potential to be a really good father. The first thing that good fathers do is pay close attention to their children. It is impossible for a child to feel deeply loved, and at the same time be ignored. Undivided parental attention empowers children deep into their souls, giving them self-esteem and values that will continue with them for the rest of their lives. Secondly, good fathers stretch their parenting skills. Fathers are wired with certain strengths and weaknesses, and they pass on these same positive and negative capacities to their children. If fathers can move beyond their natural areas of parental strength and begin to exercise their underdeveloped areas, not only will they grow as individuals, but their children will grow as well. Where can fathers find the strength to better develop their parenting skills? They can find strength in God, who is our heavenly Father. The better we understand how he relates to us as His children, the better we will understand how to treat our own children.
