Arresting Spiritual Drift
June 10, 2000 (Weekend Service)
Why do we have baptisms and Communion? Jesus established the sacrament of Communion because He knows that humans have a memory problem. Here in America, we have created memorials dedicated to Vietnam veterans, great presidents, and others to help us remember the sacrifices they made to bring us freedom. Jesus paid the price for our spiritual freedom, and at the Communion table, He is saying, "Don't forget what I have given you." When we remember Christ's saving work, we allow ourselves to be broken, affirmed, and inspired by the overwhelming presence of God's love. Baptism is a public confession that Christ's work on the cross has taken effect in our lives. It shows that we are not ashamed to display our faith openly, and that we are willing to have the community hold our lives accountable to this demonstration. When we ignore these two practices, we are deliberately disobeying Jesus' commands. We need to stop lowering the value of the Baptism and Communion sacraments, realize their profound spiritual significance, and implement them back into our lives.
