When Is Enough Enough?
May 20, 2000 (Weekend Service)
If there has ever been a "Kodak Moment" for Willow Creek Community Church, that moment is now. Unity in the congregation is unprecedented. There are no gender wars, racial wars, or wars between the rich and poor. Women feel valued and there is a servant-oriented spirit all across the board. The children's, youth, and Gen-X ministries are flourishing, and small group and church membership continues to increase exponentially. This dramatic growth has several people in the Willow Creek community asking for a time out. "Enough is enough," they are saying, "Why can't we just take a snap shot of today and sustain this lifestyle forever?" "It's time to take a break." The problem with this is that you cannot freeze a church in time. In 1985, it would have been comfortable for Willow Creek to turn away hundreds of people from church each week, sustain the current church size, and focus on its multi-million dollar debt. However, the church felt that every person in the community deserved to hear the Gospel message, no matter the cost. So, the church stepped out in faith, accumulated even more debt, and let God lead in a much needed expansion project. If Willow would have taken on the, "Enough is enough right now," mindset, the seed of death would have been sown. The church would have ignored God's calling, grown stale from the inside out, and thousands of people would have never heard how to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is time, once again, for Willow Creek to purposely move from the flat, safe waters of the harbor into the high seas of a faith adventure. Are you up to the challenge?
