Why They Call Grace Amazing
May 6, 2000 (Weekend Service)
In order for us to understand what makes grace so amazing, we must first discern the difference between justice and mercy. Justice is getting precisely what we deserve. Romans 6:23 states, "For the wages of sin is death." We deserve immediate retribution for every time we have sinned against God, and as a result, we must be separated from Him for eternity. This does not make him a treacherous and unfair God. He is only displaying necessary justice. Mercy is getting a little less punishment than we deserve. Psalm 103:8 says, "Our Lord is merciful, compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness." God shows us mercy when he does not give us retribution on a sin for sin account of our lives. There still is a price to be paid under mercy, but the punishment to be paid is a little less. Then there is this amazing thing called grace. Grace is receiving something wonderful and magnificent beyond what we deserve. The Bible says that we deserve eternal death, but God pours grace onto us through Christ's saving work on the cross. If we want to live under this grace, we must first acknowledge that we deserve God's justice, However, we must also understand that there is nothing we could say or do that would make Him stop loving us unconditionally. God is stretching out to you with grace. Will you let Him take your hand?
