Settling Life's Biggest Issue

April 29, 2000 (Weekend Service)

When we face life's difficulties, it makes a difference to know that we can rely on Jesus for strength. Not everyone knows what it means to entrust their lives to Christ, and when these individuals are presented with the Gospel message for the first time, they typically respond in one of six different ways. One possible response is an intellectualized response. These intellectuals understand how the theology of the message works, but they have difficulty translating the implications of the message into their daily lives. Another common response comes from individuals who are of the self-made genre. They reject Christ because it will inhibit the agenda that they have worked so hard to establish. They'd rather find God on their own terms. A cynical response questions the trustworthiness of the presented information. Much of the cynicism is rooted in previous half-truths and misinformation that the individual thinks to be reliable. Others tend to want to avoid the truth of the Gospel by using drugs or alcohol, or they may have the desire to change but are procrastinating until they are a little bit richer, older, or happier. Then there are the people who are genuinely responsive. They realize that their sin has separated them from God, that Christ paid the price for that sin, and by receiving God's grace they can have a relationship with Him and trust Him to guide them through life's hardships. How are you settling life's biggest issues? Are you looking to Christ for strength or are you depending on yourself to solve your spiritual problems?
