Living Excellent Lives: Morally
April 8, 2000 (Weekend Service)
Sometimes it feels like it doesn't pay to lead a pure, moral, and excellent life. Many of us are surrounded by people who walk on the wild side of life. And they appear to be getting away with it. We begin to envy these moral-cutting, truth-shading, and body-abusing individuals because it seems that only us do-gooders are experiencing financial hardships, marital breakdowns, and medical complications. However, this type of conclusion is simply not true. People who are leading reckless moral lives are trying to cross a stream on slippery moss-covered rocks. They may keep their balance for the first few steps, but if they walk across moss covered rocks long enough, they will eventually slip and wind up in the water. Where in your life are you stepping on slippery rocks? You may think you can get away with it. You may think you can handle that next rock. But it only takes one bad step, one careless move for your entire life to blow up in your face. And maybe the biggest danger is not that you will be exposed, embarrassed, and broken after you get wet. Maybe the biggest danger is that you will get away with your secret misbehavior. Your business associates, clients, friends, family, and spouse will never catch on to you. You will take your sinful secret to your grave. Yet, this is the most dangerous position to be in because the Bible promises that there will be a day or reckoning where a holy God settles all moral accounts. Don't put yourself in that position because you will regret your moral decisions for every moment of every day for eternity.
