Facing New Realities: Smorgasbord Spirituality
March 4, 2000 (Weekend Service)
In effort to satisfy their spiritual hunger, people in our day tend to browse through different religions and belief systems like a salad bar, picking the toppings that most fit their tastes and leaving the rest behind. Self-made faiths are designed by individuals in order to bring more control, comfort, and good feelings to their lives. Yet, these smorgasbord faiths very rarely have anything to say about accountability or justice. The Bible warns us that we cannot save our own souls. The God who has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ is an absolute moral and transcendent authority who will one day ask for an account of our sinful lives. God has demonstrated perfect love, patience, faithfulness, and self-control. And it is by this standard that He is going to judge each one of us. Fortunately, on our day of judgement, we will have someone to speak on our account. In Scripture, Jesus says, "I am the Way, I am the Truth, I am the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus paid a debt that we can never repay by taking on the penalty of our sins. If we acknowledge our own brokenness, recognize Christ's saving work, and repent of our sins, we will receive God's grace as a free gift.
