Facing New Realities: The Changing American Workplace

February 26, 2000 (Weekend Service)

The Bible describes God as a worker. He is metaphorically described as a gardener, an artist, a potter, a builder, and a shepherd throughout the Old and New Testament. We were made in God's image, and we too, were intended to do work. In light of this calling, it is sobering to consider that a recent survey reported that somewhere between 50 to 80 percent of Americans say they are dissatisfied with their jobs. There are four truths about God's callings that will help us gain perspective over our work frustrations. 1) Everybody has a calling. No one was left out when God was distributing gifts, talents, longings, and desires. He wants for all of us to have those optimal moments where we are stretched and challenged to draw upon our God given resources in extremely rewarding ways. 2) A calling is something you discover, not something you choose. God has hard wired us for specific purposes, and we must seek to fulfill those purposes with open and submitted spirits. 3) Finding your calling generates both painful and joyful experiences. Receiving a calling from God is not a romanticized adventure. Biblical characters such as Moses, Jeremiah, and Jonah received direct callings from God and still struggled with fear, and resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. 4) God will remain with us as we pursue our work. We will never be alone as we search for God's calling in our lives.
