Facing New Realities: The Sexual Ethic
February 19, 2000 (Weekend Service)
There are five current sexual myths in our culture that contradict the biblical picture of human sexuality. 1) Sex is just a physical thing. Sexual desire is viewed simply as an expression of breeding strategies that will further one's gene pool. The Bible, however, tells us that our bodies and souls cannot be separated. Our bodies cry out for intimacy because our souls cry out for intimacy. 2) Sex is a powerful drive that cannot be controlled. This myth does not take into account the human will. Through prayer, accountability, wisdom, and courage we can overcome those primal sexual desires. 3) One needs to "test drive" a partner's sexual compatibility before marriage is considered. This approach provides conditional commitment to an unconditionally intimate action. When sex is practiced outside of a marriage, an element of insecurity and fear is always introduced into the relationship. 4) Marriage will resolve all of one's past sexual difficulties. We have a responsibility to achieve oneness of heart, mind, and soul with our spouse. If past sexual issues are left unresolved in our lives, we are not holding up our end of the deal. 5) Sexual sin is unforgivable. Some of the people who were most attracted to Jesus in the New Testament were people who failed miserably in the sex department. They would come to Jesus, and he would forgive them, love them, and give them hope.
