Facing New Realities: Life.Com

February 5, 2000 (Weekend Service)

The good news about the Internet is that it can make us all smarter, richer, better connected, and well informed. However, there are some challenges connected to cyberlife. There are four new dynamics that the Internet brings that potentially threatens authentic community. 1) You can be whoever you want to be in cyberspace. Many of the normal safeguards against deception are taken away when one can't be seen, thus, there is more room for lying or embellishments in presenting who you are. 2) Anonymity is up, but accountability is down. In regular 3-D life, relationships are part of a broader network of accountability, but Internet relationships are isolated incidences that are difficult to expose. 3) When facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language are off the playing field, there is a sense that anything goes. People use violent, insulting, or crude words in ways in which they would never use if they were facing that person face to face. 4) When disinhibition increases, levels of intimacy accelerate as well. People share secrets, fantasies, and other private matters with each other much earlier in the relationship than they probably should. We need to avoid temptations like these by 1) engaging ourselves in real life relationships, 2) finding individuals to keep us accountable, 3) monitoring and protecting our children, and 4) by looking for true intimacy with God.
