Since the Enlightenment of the 18th century, philosophers have argued that only fools look to God for a transcendent code of values. Immanuel Kant believed that truth is derived at by pure, human reason. He said that it is possible to use our minds to figure out what is right and wrong. Jean Rousseau slightly disagreed with Kant. He suggested that we should look to our hearts for guidance. As long as the higher law was maintained and religion was not interjected into any kind of moral system, everyone's inner goodness would eventually flow out and spill over. Friedrich Nietzsche found following his mind and heart to be too abstract of concepts to be practically carried out. According to Nietzche, power should be our goal in life, not goodness. When we follow our will, we can make our own way in the world and write the rules of morality as we go. The combination of these three philosophies make up the lies that our culture buys in to. The world tells us to look to ourselves for truth, but the Bible tells us that following our hearts, minds, and desires will only lead us down the dark path of remorse, guilt, shame, and deception. The Bible is the true moral compass. It teaches us how to build a life, how to build a marriage, how to raise kids, how to handle our money, and how to resolve conflict. Through the Bible, God has clearly revealed the values that will get us in a right relationship with Him. If we do not spend time reading God's Word everyday, we will start to believe the lies that will eventually destroy us.
