The highlight of the entire series - and the one service that still gets talked about 2 years later - was the one in which we did the Old Testament Rewind drama. In January 2006 we resumed the OTC with a recap of the entire 1st section by using the first half of this wonderful, funny, and quick paced drama. Our youth group took two months to get their parts and the timing down and on the 1st Sunday of January - normally a quiet Sunday - we staged it. The congregation laughed at all the right places and were caught up in the story as the story moved from one well known Bible story the next. If you have seen the DVD of the drama then you’ll know that the greatest surprise comes with the telling of Moses and the parting of the Red Sea: and our youth didn’t hold back! Right on cue they ran out from behind the screen with water pistols and sprayed the congregation as they ran up the aisle! The children squealed, the young adults laughed – some of the older, more staid members, were not amused but didn’t melt: all in all, I don’t think that they’ll forget that God’s power parted the waters so that His people could find salvation and freedom.
This drama’s script covers the entire scope of the Old Testament, and while we only focused on the 1st half of it, it is a wonderful drama (we did find that it was hard to sustain the pace and humour in the latter part of the drama – but the drama does its best with difficult material.) This drama is a wonderful way to teach the basic outline of God’s story of salvation to a youth group/service or to a Sunday School: it would also be a wonderful outreach tool if you were to perform it at local schools. I highly recommend this resource for your worship, your youth, or your Sunday School.
Thank you to the wonderful writers and worship dramatists at Willow Creek for putting this drama together.
(PS: I saw on the old service builder website that there was a drama entitled “New Testament Rewind” but I haven’t seen or heard of a script or video for it: does it exist? Or am I just wishful thinking? Just curious.)
