It seems as if the era of clear-cut heroes -- the Joe Dimaggios -- is gone. Now we have professional athletes who seem to be more interested in cash than in competing, and we have famous millionaires who seem more involved with fraud than philanthropy. We have politicians and even church leaders who have fallen into disgrace. Where are all the heroes?
We could all agree that there are lots of people who are heroes and whose stories are recounted in the Bible. When we look at those people, one of the common threads we see in their lives is that they all started out as ordinary, everyday people.
In fact, one way we could define the concept of hero is to say that heroes are ordinary people who allow God to use them to have an extraordinary impact on others. In almost every case, doing that involves some sort of sacrifice or overcoming an obstacle or difficulty.
