The very last thought of a person will usually express the passion of his or her life, A loving wife on her deathbed will think of her husband; the workaholic of his accounts; the addict of one last shot; the miser of his gold; and the wounded soldier dying on a distant battlefield of home.
For Jesus, the central passion of his life was the new community. He had come into the world to reconcile humans with God. He had taught and preached reconciliation. He had lived it, and now he was dying for it. So understandably during his last moments of quietness with his followers, he prayed for the community of reconciliation. He knew there could be no such community unless it had oneness. So he prayed for their oneness.
