Coming Back (DVD)

A powerful and sometimes humorous story of a man's spiritual journey and his relationship with his wife and her friends.

Evan Powell was smitten by his co-worker Cari. He recalls that it was her persistence that brought him to church. When Cari introduces Evan to her small group, he chuckles asking himself "small group of what?". He soon learns her friends are a small group of people who care a lot about each other. Resistant at first, Evan refuses invitations to socialize with Cari's small group. It is Bubba who finds Evan's hot button, vintage cars.

When Evan loses his brother, Cari's small group travels four hours for the funeral. He is moved by their support. The loss is a spiritual awakening for Evan. As a result of that experience he joins the small group, becomes a Christian, gets baptized and marries Cari. Their jobs take them to California and they leave with great expectations. With time, their marriage falters and Evan returns home. He runs into Bubba and shares the fragile state of marriage. Bubba invites Evan to come to small group so they can help him through this. When Evan arrives, his small group embraces him.

The song Island, which is used at the end of this drama, matches the mood and theme of the drama perfectly. John Donne wrote: "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." We build walls of isolation but God made us for deep and meaningful relationships with others. This song is an honest prayer: "Soften my heart" I don't want to be an island anymore."
