General Session – Bill Donahue & Henry Cloud: The Ancient-Future Leader

 

 

Willow Creek's Bill Donahue and author and clinical psychologist Henry Cloud explore five basic principles every effective group leader should understand.


 

Bill Donahue

Bill DonahueBill’s passion for helping churches develop leaders through small groups led him to Willow Creek in 1992. Bill is currently the executive director of group life and adult ministries for the Willow Creek Association. Prior to that, he served on the staff of Willow Creek Community Church for six years, helping launch and develop the church-wide small group ministry. He was also leader of the couples ministry, director of the Willow Creek Institute, and headed the leadership training department. Bill has authored or co-authored numerous books, including Leading Life-Changing Small GroupsCoaching Life-Changing Small Group Leaders, Seven Deadly Sins of Small Group Ministry, Walking the Small Group Tightrope, and Building a Church of Small Groups. Bill has a Ph.D. in adult education from the University of North Texas, a master’s degree in biblical studies from Dallas Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Princeton University. Bill and his wife, Gail, have two children, Ryan and Kinsley.

 

Henry Cloud

Henry CloudDr. Cloud is a clinical psychologist with a unique ability to connect with his audiences. He has a well-established private consulting practice in California and is an international speaker. Drawing upon his broad range of experiences in private practice, leadership consulting, and media, Dr. Cloud simplifies life’s issues and gives easy-to-understand, practical advice. He has written or co-written many books, including Making Small Groups Work, Boundaries, Nine Things You Simply Must Do, Changes That Heal, and the 2006 release Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality.  His most recent book, co-authored with Dr. John Townsend, is titled It’s Not My Fault. He has earned three Gold Medallion awards and was granted the distinguished Retailers Choice award for God Will Make a WayGod Will Make a Way was the focus of a book and television partnership with Integrity Publishers and Time-Life. Dr. Cloud has been a guest on many radio and television shows and networks and written for numerous publications. Dr. Cloud co-hosts the nationally syndicated radio program New Life Live, which is heard in over 150 markets. Millions of listeners have benefited from his wit and wisdom for over a decade. As president of Cloud-Townsend Resources, Dr. Cloud has produced and conducted hundreds of public seminars around the country. He speaks on relationships — marriage, parenting, dating, personal growth, and spirituality. His seminars are often broadcast live to over two thousand venues at a time. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University, having earned a B.S. in psychology with honors. He completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Biola University and his clinical internship at Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. His philanthropic interests lie in the area of homelessness and the inner city, as well as Third World missions and development. He serves on the board of the Los Angeles Mission, a rescue mission on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles.
