Dick's Column
Dear G$ Friends and Colleagues,
It’s hard these days to be involved in stewardship and not have most of your thoughts and comments be tied in with the current economic situation. The economy is the topic of conversation - and for obvious reasons. The inevitable, highly predictable consequences of our actions have come to pass. Contrary to the claims that a confluence of unforeseeable events got us to where we are (baloney!) it was simply a question of ‘when’, not ‘if.’
It is the worst of times and, from a stewardship position, perhaps the best of times. It’s the worst of times because literally all of us will suffer to greater or lesser degrees. Unfortunately, while those of us who have means may be inconvenienced, those at the bottom of the economic ladder will often be crushed.
But it also may be the best of times because now that the bubble has burst, a mass reorientation of thinking has a chance to take place.
A much more receptive populace seems willing to hear what now appear to be much more obvious biblical truths that:
- Ultimate security does not lie in earthly wealth
- The borrower is servant/slave to the lender
- The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil
- We need to be on our guard against greed
- Richness of stuff does not lead to richness of being
With the truths revealed, we can offer the training and tools that answer the question, “How then shall we live financially?”
The Budget Course and the new Freed-Up Financial Living curriculums answer that question by grounding participants in the biblical principles surrounding finances and fulfilling two promises we state in the course:
- You will leave with a Spending Plan in your hand, the knowledge in you head how to implement it and the motivation in your heart to follow through.
- We will prove to you record keeping is simpler than you thought, takes less time than you believed and doesn't require a PhD in mathematics.
Seize the day! Think outside the box! I loved hearing about the church that had a large crowd at their Freed-Up course and discovered that over half the folks were not attendees of the church. It’s a great time for outreach.
May God favor your stewardship efforts,

Dick Towner Executive Director Good $ense Ministry
