Market Indicators
Money or Meaning? For many years, the largest annual survey of incoming college freshmen has tracked a divergence in the students’ priorities, with more young people saying it’s essential or very important to become very well off.
While money long ago became important to more students than the development of a meaningful philosophy of life, there has been renewed interest in the latter priority in recent years. The recently released latest study shows an increasing interest in both priorities.
One other finding of note is that more freshmen than ever plan to work while in school to help with their bills. Almost half (49 percent) of the incoming class of 2008 said they planned to work. That’s the highest number since the survey began 32 years ago.
The survey included responses from over 240,000 first-time full-time students at 340 U.S. colleges and universities. It was conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA.
